Worthometer

2632673143_367e15d278_bWelcome to the Worthometer, the web’s only net worth percentile gauge that incorporates, reconciles, interpolates, and averages all three major surveys of household wealth: (1) the 2011 US Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), which includes up to 52,000 households; (2) the 2013 Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), which interviews 6,026 households; and (3) the 2013 University of Michigan’s Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), which surveys 9,063 households.

I’ve prepared a lengthy description of the methodology underlying the Worthometer. To read it, please click here.

How to Use the Worthometer

To make accurate use of the Worthometer (pronounced like “Speedometer”), follow these two steps.

Step No. 1: Calculate Your Household’s Net Worth

Apply this simple formula: Total Assets – Total Liabilities = Net Worth.

To figure your household’s net worth, you can use an online calculator such as those offered at AARP, Bankrate.com, and CGI.money.com. Include any real estate and vehicles you own because the surveys all count those items as assets (and they count any related loans as liabilities). For real estate valuations, visit Zillow.com; for vehicle valuations visit KBB.com.

Once you’ve figured your household’s net worth, proceed to Step No. 2.

Step No. 2: Use the Worthometer to Look Up Your Household’s Percentile Ranking

To see where you rank in the averaged survey results of the 2011 SIPP, 2013 SCF, and 2013 PSID (as expanded by a process of linear interpolation), simply scroll down the “Net Worth” column until you reach the dollar figure that’s nearest to but not over your household’s net worth. The corresponding number in the column to the immediate right, the “Percentile” column, reports where your household ranks in an averaging of the three component surveys.

Here’s an example. Jane Dough’s net worth including residence and car is $457,893. According to the Worthometer, Jane ranks in the 81.50th Percentile of US households, because that’s the percentile ranking closest to but not over her current net worth of $457,893. If Jane wants to see how she ranks under each of the three individual surveys (the SIPP, SCF, and PSID), she can look at those specific charts as well (she ranks in the 84.50th Percentile, 80.50th Percentile, and 80.50th Percentile, respectively).

And so, without further ado, here is . . .
